Some Information About Both Tests First…

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) and the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) are standardized tests used as part of the admission process for various graduate programs. The GRE is more broadly used across a range of disciplines (including business), while the GMAT is specifically tailored for business school admissions.

What Happens When I Use This Score Converter?

  • The GRE comprises two main sections: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, each scored between 130 and 170.
  • On the GMAT, the Verbal and Quantitative sections each have scores ranging from 0 to 60, though most test-takers score between 6 and 51, which is considered the typical scoring range by the GMAT. The Total score, which combines these two sections, ranges from 200 to 800, reflecting a combined measure of verbal and quantitative abilities.
  • When you use a score converter, you can see what your GRE scores might look like as a GMAT Total score, which ranges from 200 to 800. Additionally, it breaks down this total into separate GMAT Verbal and Quantitative scores.

This conversion can help you understand where you stand and assist you in your application process to various programs, especially business schools. It will give you an estimated view of how your performance translates across these two major tests.

To Make It Easier to Understand…

Let's talk about Alex, who aced the GRE with perfect scores: 170 in Verbal and 170 in Quant (Clearly, Alex is the GRE whisperer we all wish we could be).

Alex decided to apply to a business school that prefers the GMAT, so he used our GRE to GMAT Score Converter to see how his scores would compare. To his surprise, the converter showed a GMAT Total score of 800, but the Verbal and Quantitative scores were 46 and 53, respectively, not the maximum 60 he expected.

Here's why: the GMAT scoring system works differently than the GRE's. While Alex's GRE scores were at the maximum, the GMAT sections have a different scale and maximum commonly reported scores—around 51 for both Verbal and Quant, not 60.

This means that Alex's GRE perfection translates to top-tier GMAT scores, but not the absolute maximum, due to the distinct scoring scales and methods used by each test.

Don’t worry, though. This conversion reflects Alex's excellent performance equivalently across both exams, showing he's a strong candidate. And graduate schools are aware of this!
