Study in China: Scholarships Now Open for International Students

The Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Scholarship, a program in China that aims to attract excellent students from around the world, is now open to international students who want to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees in the country.
The 2025 Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) offers funding to support successful students so they can cover tuition fees, living costs, and other educational expenses while studying in China, Erudera.com reports.
SJTU provides different types of financial support, such as funding from the Chinese government, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, or the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Students applying for the Chinese government scholarship should directly contact the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
The prestigious SJTU scholarships cover the following:
- Full tuition fees
- University housing
- Travel costs
- Monthly allowances to help students with living expenses
According to the official website of the International Student Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, SJTU scholarships are allocated in various forms, including:
- First-Class Scholarship (covers tuition and insurance, provides an allowance for living costs, and 2,500 CNY per month for accommodation).
- Second-Class Scholarship (covers tuition, insurance and provides 1,000 CNY per month for accommodation).
- Third-Class Scholarship (covers accommodation and insurance).
There are over 3,000 higher education institutions in China, with more programs being delivered in English in recent years. According to data from Studyportals, between 2021 and 2023, the number of English-taught programs in Chinese institutions has increased by 12 percent, from 2,550 to about 2,900, respectively.

The university's official website shows the school enrolls over 17,000 undergraduate students (domestic), over 22,000 post-graduates, and nearly 13,000 PhD students. More than 2,000 international students study at the university.
According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Education, there were 35 million undergraduate students and 3.3 million postgraduates studying in China in 2021. Of this number, a total of 255,720 were international students pursuing full-time studies.
