UK: University of Sheffield Courses Ranked Among Best in Country

Students across the United Kingdom have voted courses at the University of Sheffield as some of the best in the country, with satisfaction overall standing at 78 percent, according to findings from the latest National Student Survey (NSS).

The percentage, according to the survey, is two percent higher than the sector average, Erudera.com reports.

“We are happy to have achieved a 78% student satisfaction rate in the 2022 National Student Satisfaction Survey (NSS), 2% above the sector average,” Sheffield tweeted.

In a press release, the university notes that this year’s survey has listed the its materials science course as the best in the UK for satisfaction, while 13 subjects were placed in the top five and three others in the top ten.

Vice-President for Education at the University of Sheffield, Mary Vincent, expressed delight that students have recognized the university’s work as delivering the best instruction in the country.

She thanked the staff for their efforts to achieve such results, adding that their hard work is an inspiration for the next generation.

“Listening to the views of our students is so important in helping us further develop our student experience and the National Student Survey provides us with a really useful insight into what it is our students want and need,” Vincent added.

The survey indicates that subjects that were ranked in the top five or ten in the country are:

  • archaeology (2)
  • landscape design (2)
  • mechanical engineering (3)
  • materials technology (3)
  • genetics (3)
  • microbiology and cell science (3)
  • engineering (non-specific) (3)
  • planning (urban, rural and regional) (4)
  • Asian studies (5)
  • chemical, process and energy engineering (5)
  • adult nursing (5)
  • artificial intelligence (5)
  • bioengineering, medical and biomedical engineering (8)
  • software engineering (9)
  • dentistry (10)

Sheffield has also been voted as the top institution for 11 subjects, including materials science, engineering, archaeology, landscape design, aeronautical and aerospace, computer science and journalism, and more, in the Russell Group, an association representing 24 leading UK universities.

A month ago, the University of Sheffield ranked among world’s 100 best universities in the QS World University Rankings 2023. Another good news for the university this year was University’s Student Union being awarded the Whatuni Student Choice Award 2022 for Best Students’ Union. The University of Sheffield has been receiving the award for the fifth year in a row.

The latest National Student Survey (NSS) gathers student responses about learning and teaching at the university, academic support, assessments and feedback, learning resources, and student union.

The University of Sheffield Firth College was established in 1879, while in 1905, the institution received its Royal Charter. To date, the university has 55 academic departments.

In the 2021/22 academic year, some 30,129 students enrolled at Sheffield. As of July 2021, the number of all staff at the university was 7,950.
