The University of Massachusetts (UMass) has approved an increase in tuition for the 2024/25 academic year.
The UMass Board of Trustees Committee on Administration and Finance has voted to increase tuition by up to 3 percent for all in-state and out-of-state undergraduate students on all its campuses, Erudera.com reports.
UMass Amherst has experienced the largest increase among all campuses - a total of $17,006, which is $415 more than the previous year.
For out-of-state students also attending Amherst, tuition has increased by 3 percent, bringing the total to $39,693, $1,156 more than last year.
Besides Amherst, trustees have also unanimously voted to increase tuition at other campuses: UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth and UMass Lowell.
However, the increase in tuition is smaller at these campuses. For example, residents attending the UMass Boston campus will pay $15,278 in tuition, which is $373 more than last year. On the other hand, tuition for out-of-state students now stands at $37,495, meaning $914 more than in 2023.

Additionally, the price of room and board has also increased. A 4.5 percent rise will be applied at Amherst campus, a 2.3 percent at Boston, a 3.6 percent at Dartmouth and 3.7 percent at Lowell campus.
Last year, the University of Massachusetts took a similar decision, increasing tuition by 2.5 percent for the 2023/24 academic year.
UMass enrolls nearly 74,000 students at its four campuses. The highest numbers are reported at Lowell. The university’s data show the numbers stand as follows:
- Amherst - 32,229 students

- Dartmouth - 7,470 students
- Lowell - 17,342 students
Last month, UMass announced its plans to increase early college enrollment for the next five years to serve over 2,000 high school students and provide more access to those in rural areas of the state. Every year, about 20,000 students graduate from the university.
