List of Countries That May Be the Target of International Students After US Abortion Ban

PRESS RELEASE - August 12, 2022

The United States tops the list of the most popular study abroad destinations with nearly 1 million international students, but with the U.S Supreme Court’s decision to take away the constitutional right to Abortion and overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade, the US is potentially becoming less attractive for international students.

Seeing the recent developments, Erudera revealed the most popular study destinations that allow abortion for at least the first ten weeks of the pregnancy, and which may become the new target of international students after the US Abortion Ban, listed from the country that hosts the highest number of international students in an academic year.

  1. United Kingdom - 605,130
  2. France - 370,000
  3. Russia - 334,500
  4. Turkey - 250,000
  5. Spain - 208,366
  6. Ireland - 176,500
  7. Denmark - 150,643
  8. The Netherlands - 80,000
  9. Italy - 32,000
  10. Sweden - 27,329
  11. Finland - 20,000
  12. Norway - 13,533

Erudera has also noticed an increase in requests for universities in the above-listed countries, that have a higher chance of accepting more applications from international students from now on.

Donjeta Pllana from Erudera comments:

Students planning to study abroad now have one more thing to consider before choosing their study destination: the abortion law. While so far students who intended to study in the US had no problem with that due to the 1973 Roe v. Wade, since last June, this is something that should be taken into account.

Data show that 57% of aborts that took place in 2019 in the US, were reported for women aged 20-29, which is the age when women are usually completing their Bachelor and Master's degree. Such data show the need for women to have access to abortion rights, in order for them to be able to complete their degrees. The importance of having access to safe abortion for women students in their 20ties is vital, and such a thing will definitely affect their study destination choices.”
