Although the number of college graduates has increased significantly over time, College Graduation Statistics show that more than 50% of college students do not graduate on time, and more than one million students drop out of college every year.

  • The number of college graduates in the United States has increased by 187% from 1970 to 2021.

  • Ten years later, the number of college graduates increased to 1,752,170 — showing an increase of 25% from 1970 to 1980.
  • From the academic year of 1980/1981 to 1990/1991, the number of college graduates increased by 52% — from 1,752,170 as it was in 1980, it rose to 2,678,927 in 1990.
  • Thirty years forward from 1970, the number of college graduates increased to 2,968,626 — showing an increase of 113% from 1970 to 2000.
  • In 2010, the number of college graduates reached 4,584,785.
  • In comparison to the 2000/20001 academic year, the number of students that graduated from college in 2010 increased by 54%.
  • The number of students that graduated from college in 2011/2012 experienced a growth of 239% — showing an increase of 3,336,523 from 1970.

Humanities

This field includes degrees in Area, ethnic, cultural, gender and group studies; English language and literature/letters; Foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics; Liberal arts and sciences, general studies, and humanities; Multi/interdisciplinary studies; Philosophy and religious studies; Theology and vocational and Visual and performing arts.

  • A total of 269,934 students received a bachelor’s degree in Humanities.

  • 57,952 students graduated with a master’s degree.

  • A total of 8,358 graduated with a doctor's degree.

  • In comparison to the academic year of 1970/1971, the number of students that graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Humanities (143,549) increased by 88%.

  • The number of master’s degrees awarded in the Humanities field was 34,510 in the academic year of 1970/1971 — showing an increase of 68% in the current number.

  • From the academic year 1970/1971, the number of doctor’s degrees awarded in the field of Humanities has increased from 4,402 to 8,358 — showing an increase of 90%.

Psychology

  • A total of 29,588 students earned associate’s degrees in institutions that primarily offer online programs.

  • 107,029 students earned bachelor’s degrees at these types of institutions.

College Graduation Demographics

  • White, Black and Hispanic students belong to the group of students earning the most associate’s degrees.

  • Apart from White, Black and Hispanic students, Asian and international students earn the most bachelor’s degrees.

  • White, Hispanic and international students earn the most master’s and doctor’s degrees.

  • The highest number of college graduates belongs to students of ages 25 to 29.

  • The highest number of associate’s degrees is awarded to female students.

  • In 1980/1981, the number of male students that earned bachelor’s degrees was higher for male students. After that, the number of female students with bachelor’s degrees kept increasing.

  • Up until 2004/2005, the number of male students who earned doctor’s degrees was higher than the number of female students.
  • Out of all students in the United States, international students make 5% of the total student population, and the vast majority come from Asia.

  • In comparison to the projections of 2021/2022, the number of master’s degrees awarded is projected to increase by 1.44% by the academic year of 2026-2027— hence reaching a total of 844,000.
  • During the three following academic years (2027/2028; 2028/2029; 2029/2030), the number of master’s degrees awarded is projected to increase to 849,000.

  • The number of students graduating with a doctor’s degree during the academic year of 2023/2024 is projected to be 188,000 — showing a 0.5 difference from the 2021/2022 academic year.
  • Projections show that the number of students graduating with a doctor’s degree during 2025-2026 will not increase significantly either — showing an increase of only 0.53% in the number of doctor’s degrees awarded.
