Int'l Student Numbers at Jönköping University Have Risen to Record Levels

The number of international students at Jönköping University (JU), an international university in Sweden, rose to a record high this August, according to figures released by the school.
Jönköping welcomed about 3,800 new students to campus, of which 1,145 are international students, the largest number in the university’s history, Erudera.com reports.
“Among the 1,145 new international students, 825 new international degree-seeking students have arrived and enrolled, setting an all-time high for both EU and non-EU international degree-seeking students,” the university states in a press release.
Additionally, 320 students attending JU’s partner universities around the world, who will participate in student exchange programs at JU have arrived at the institution. Exchange students at JU account for nearly one-third of all new international students on campus.
This year, student enrollment has increased by 35 percent compared to the previous year and by 60 percent since 2022. According to figures, of the new international students, 434 are from countries outside the EU/EEA, while 391 are from EU/EEA countries.
Commenting on the international enrollment trend at JU, Eric Freid, International Student Recruitment Manager, said it is inspiring to see the campus full of excitement as a record number of international students from all over the world start studying at JU this academic year.
"In addition to the upward trajectory of international students at JU, we’re particularly pleased to see an increase in the number of admitted students enrolling. Students have a lot of choices these days and it’s great to see so many students choosing JU,” he said.
Jönköping University (JU) was founded in 1994. Today, it enrolls more than 14,000 students, including undergraduates, master's, and doctorates. Last year, 2,355 bachelor’s and master’s degrees were awarded.
As stated on the university's website, it is one of three private, non-profit higher education institutions In Sweden authorized to grant PhD degrees. JU also has one of the largest exchange networks, with partnerships at over 320 partner universities worldwide, which the school describes as “a cornerstone of the commitment to internationalization.”
“Despite receiving many scholarships and offers from US schools, I chose to study at JIBS. I believe sustainability is crucial in the world and I really liked what I heard about JIBS and its programmes,” said Alessandra Lopez, an exchange student pursuing her bachelor’s in Sustainable Enterprise Development at Jönköping International Business School.
Some 39,806 international students studied in Sweden in the 2021/22 academic year, with female students outnumbering males. That year, 21,754 female and 18,052 male students began studies in Sweden.
Of these, 11,644 were exchange students and a total of 28,197 were "free movers" - students who arranged their studies independently without participating in student exchange programs.
