Texas State University (TXST) has announced it is expanding for the first time outside the United States, opening a new campus in Querétaro, a city in central Mexico.

After two years of discussions, the Board of Regents voted to approve the contract on Texas State University Mexico in August. The school has partnered with Elisia Education Hub to open this international campus, where the first students will begin studies in fall 2025.

“The Texas State University System Board of Regents approved the initiative in August following two years of planning and discussions to bring the campus to fruition. This marks TXST’s first international campus,” Texas State said.

The signing ceremony was held on September 4, 2024, and Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González and TXST President Kelly Damphousse also attended, Erudera.com reports.

The courses will be offered in several fields, but so far the focus has been on biotechnology, communication, engineering, and psychology.

“Although the degree offerings are still being determined, initial discussions have centered around engineering, psychology, biochemistry and mass communication,” the university’s statement reads.

According to the announcement, all degrees at the new campus will be fully accredited in the US, and programs will be delivered in English. The curriculum will be completed by the TXST faculty while Elisia Education Hub will decide on tuition fees, recruiting instructors, and covering operating expenses.

The university administrators have already begun talks with representatives from Australia, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, and South Korea to reach partnerships that could pay off in the next few years.

The city of Querétaro is known as an industrial center, where over 1,500 multinational companies and several universities are located. The top five universities in Querétaro are:

  • Autonomous University of Queretaro
  • Queretaro Institute of Technology
  • Polytechnic University of Queretaro
  • Polytechnic University of Santa Rosa Jauregui
  • Technological University of Queretaro

Texas State University is a public institution established in 1899 in Texas. Today, the school offers 99 bachelor programs, 91 master’s and 16 doctoral.

The number of students studying at Texas State totaled 38,873 in the fall of last year, 95 percent of whom were from Texas. More than 34,000 students pursue undergraduate degrees, and more than 4,000 are graduate students.

Last year, Texas State University announced a partnership with the University of Padova in Italy, where 32 students had the chance to enroll in classes and study alongside local students.
