University of Helsinki Admits Over 1,300 Applicants to International Master’s Programs

The University of Helsinki has admitted 1,312 new applicants from 148 countries, including Finland, who applied to 35 international master’s programs offered at the institution. This is 18 percent of all applicants, the school has said.

According to a statement issued by the university on Monday, April 17, 2023, the total number of applicants in the application round in January 2023 was 7,116, Erudera.com reports.

“A student place was offered to 18 percent of the applicants, which means that 1,312 new students were admitted to the international master’s programmes. They hail from both Finland and the rest of the world,” the statement reads.

Of the admitted students, 76 percent are from outside Finland, and 60 percent come from non-EU and non-EEA countries. The majority of students admitted to study at the university are from the following countries:

  • China
  • Bangladesh
  • Sri Lanka
  • Pakistan

School officials confirmed students were notified about their offers of admission through email and have until July 14, 2023, to accept or reject the offers. International master’s programs at the University of Helsinki begin in the autumn of this year.

At the end of March, the University of Helsinki received 30,400 applications in the joint procedure for higher education institutions in Finland. Most individuals (27,300) applied to bachelor’s programs, and the remaining 3,200 to master’s programs.

Regarding study programs, the number one choice was the bachelor’s program in law, with lectures offered in Finnish only, which attracted 3,574 applicants. Another popular program for applicants was the degree program in medicine, also taught in Finnish, with 3,364 applicants, followed by the bachelor’s program in psychology, with 2,910 applicants.

3,206 students applied to master’s programs, most of them, 1,444 applicants to the program in Development of Health Care Services. Other popular choices for students were:

  • master’s degree program in pharmacy – 288 applicants
  • master’s degree program in psychology – 233 applicants

I wish you all the best of luck and success in the admissions process,” Rector Sari Lindblom of the University of Helsinki said while commenting on students' interest in studying at the university.

Established in 1640, the University of Helsinki has about 40,000 students and researchers. There are more than 31,000 students enrolled at the university, six percent of them international students.
