How Much Do Engineers Earn?

Engineering degrees are some of the highest-paid degrees globally, and employees tend to enjoy high job satisfaction levels. Entry-level engineering jobs pay less than when individuals move further in their careers. However, engineers are still among the top highest-paid professionals in the world.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), engineers’ median annual salary reaches $91,010. The mean yearly wage in chemical engineering professions is $114,470, while computer hardware engineers earn a mean annual wage of $117,840. Overall, even the starting salaries are among the highest for engineers.

Reasons to Study Engineering

1. Numerous Professional Prospects

Engineering is in demand globally, which means you will have numerous professional prospects, which is one of the main reasons to study engineering. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, engineering opportunities are expected to grow by approximately 4.0% by 2024. Employability is an excellent asset of an engineering degree, and you are highly bound to find a well-paying job and be satisfied with it. Engineers enjoy a low unemployment rate around the world, and with more experience, the chances of landing a good job tend to become higher.

2. Financial Stability

Apart from having numerous employment prospects, engineers tend to land high-paying jobs, and the average salary is quite high. The amount engineers earn is among the highest for any university degree, which can go even higher as experience starts to build up. The engineering field is high-paying in the labor market, enabling you to lead a comfortable (or even luxurious) lifestyle.

3. Creative, Critical, and Analytical Thinking

While pursuing your engineering degree, especially when you enter the job market, you will learn a great deal about being a creative, critical, and analytical thinker. This is particularly important once you enter the job market, where you will be able to get some of the most challenging jobs done. The role these skills play, not only in the job market but also in your professional life, is enormous. An engineering degree will make you confident in problem-solving, no matter the problem.

4. You Contribute to the World for the Better

Engineers build the world, one project at a time, and are proud to do so. It is one of the most significant reasons to study engineering; you get to contribute to society through your work. Cars, airplanes, bridges, and most of the things that surround you - they are all products of engineering. Although the road towards becoming an engineer might be challenging, it will all be worth it for as long as you love what you do.

5. It Is a Highly-Regarded Degree

Engineering is a prestigious degree, and people recognize the challenges that engineers have to undergo to become successful and good at what they do. This is why being an engineer means you will notice a lot of nodding faces recognizing your efforts around you. Engineers are a necessary asset to all industries, whether it is food, music, computer, or films. The hard work and deduction you give to pursue your career will be recognized and highly regarded as well.

How Long Does an Engineering Degree Take?

Becoming an engineer begins with a bachelor’s degree program in any discipline, which requires four years of full-time study. Pursuing an engineering degree is a challenging journey, but it is nothing you will not be able to achieve with hard work and dedication. The curriculum is equipped with homework and many studying and projects, so the degree program’s initial duration - although theoretically four years - might be prolonged to an average of 4.5 or 5 years.

Many engineering graduates enroll in master’s studies after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, but just like with a bachelor’s degree, it does not mean all students graduate in two years. This is mostly because many students work part-time or even full-time jobs. For Ph.D. studies, a research degree might take up to 8 years to finish, while a Doctor of Engineering program (DEng) usually takes three years to complete.

Top Countries to Study Engineering

1. Germany

Apart from being affordable, considering state universities are mostly tuition-free in Germany, this country also leaves room for quality. Germany is known for its automotive and manufacturing industries, and due to this, but not only, it is one of the most preferred countries for international students when it comes to studying engineering.

4. Australia

Seven of Australia’s universities rank among the top 100 worldwide universities, including top universities to study engineering like the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, and Monash University. Engineering students in Australia can obtain their skills and qualifications by participating in leading research activities and working closely with the real-world industry.

5. China

China also owns some of the best engineering universities and has trained some of the highest skilled engineers around the world, across all engineering disciplines. China boasts an excellent reputation in technology, and the number of international students is constantly on the rise.

How Much Does an Engineering Degree Cost?

Engineering degrees are typically more expensive than other disciplines. In the US, an undergraduate engineering degree will cost approximately $35,000 to $80,000 per year (on average), depending on the university (private universities tend to charge more) and the course. There are more than 100 top engineering colleges in the US, with various specializations available. Tuition fees for postgraduate programs also fall on that average price range.

For example, in other countries, somewhere in Europe, the tuition cost for Engineering programs is usually lower than in the US. In Germany, education is free in public universities; therefore, students will not need to pay tuition fees, except for a few administrative fees. On the other hand, the cost of studying engineering in the UK on average can range from $30,000 to $50,000 annually.
