At Least 25 Million Student Loan Borrowers May Receive Debt Relief This Week

The Biden administration is sending emails to tens of millions of student loan borrowers this Friday, notifying the latter about potential debt relief.
According to the Department of Education, at least 25 million borrowers could be eligible for loan forgiveness, Erudera.com reports.
“STOP SCROLLING. I'm sending 40 million borrowers info on student debt relief this morning," US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
In a press release on July 31, the Department of Education said it will begin sending emails to borrowers with “at least one outstanding federally held student loan” about debt cancellation options.
However, it also said that receiving such emails does not guarantee student loan borrowers will qualify for relief. The rules that would permit student debt forgiveness are expected to be finalized this fall, and until then, the department will update borrowers with additional information.
“These latest steps will mark the next milestone in our efforts to help millions of borrowers who’ve been buried under a mountain of student loan interest, or who took on debt to pay for college programs that left them worse off financially, those who have been paying their loans for twenty or more years, and many others,” the US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.
In its announcement, the department lists the following groups of student loan borrowers who could qualify for relief:
- Borrowers whose debt has increased since they started making repayments.
- Those who have been repaying for decades.
- Those who already qualify for student loan forgiveness under one of the government’s current programs but have not yet applied.
- Borrowers from “low-financial value” programs, meaning those who attended institutions where the program was not worth the money.
Moreover, the department explained that student loan borrowers who accept relief are not obliged to take any other steps, and no applications will be required. However, if they consider opting out for any reason, they have until August 30 to contact their loan servicer. These individuals will not be able to opt back in.
The Biden administration has canceled about $170 billion in student loans for nearly five million borrowers through several initiatives.
Last year, the Supreme Court rejected Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, which was announced in August 2022 and expected to benefit tens of millions of Americans. The court ruled in favor of six Republican-led states, which insisted President Biden was overstepping his powers with this plan to cancel $400 billion in student loan debt.
