Brown University has admitted 898 prospective students to the undergraduate Class of 2028 through its early decision program, the university announced on Friday, December 15.
The university has received 6,244 applications, the second-largest early decision applicant pool in its 259-year history, Erudera.com reports.
Commenting on the numbers, the Associate Provost for Enrollment and Dean of Admission, Logan Powell, highlighted Brown’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity in higher education, adding that the Class of 2028 consists of talents from every background.
“The foundational members of the Class of 2028 possess an incredible depth of talent, perspectives, and intellectual curiosity. The admitted students demonstrate a profoundly meaningful understanding of Brown, how they can contribute to the community, and the ways they will benefit from sharing their own knowledge while also learning from others,” Powell said.
This year’s data show a positive trend in the number of students who will be the first in their family to attend college, which is 4 percent higher than last year.
Among the admitted students, 19 percent will be the first in their family to attend college, while 12 percent are international citizens. These are the highest percentages in the last five years.
Powel said the change reflects Brown’s outreach to prospective students from rural, low-income backgrounds and first-generation students.
For the Class of 2028, Brown University made some adjustments to its undergraduate application process, introducing new questions such as requiring applicants to describe themselves in three words, their most meaningful extracurricular activity, what would they teach if given the chance to do it, and why they wanted to attend Brown.
According to Powell, students came up with creative responses, showing their passion for exploring interdisciplinary solutions to global challenges.
“Applicants articulated incredible examples of the ways that interdisciplinary research and academic work at Brown — whether it’s engineering and art, or neuroscience and music — will enable them to address solutions to a range of challenges,” Powell said.
University’s data reveal that students admitted to the Class of 2028 come from 52 nations and 45 US states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Most international students admitted to the university come from Canada, China (including Hong Kong), India, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, and the UK.
In recent years, Brown introduced several measures to support its students financially, including replacing loans with grants in financial aid packages and eliminating the consideration of a family’s home equity when calculating students’ financial status.
Additionally, Brown aims to become fully need-blind for international undergraduates, starting with the Class of 2029.
Early decision applicants were informed of their application status on December 15. The deadline for regular decision applicants for the Class of 2028 is January 3, 2024.
