Glasgow City Council has approved a plan to build over 400 residential flats and student rooms where a total of 934 students will be accommodated.
Property developer Summix Capital received the green light to construct these flats across four blocks in Central Quay. Along with these, 11 commercial units will be built, according to a report by BBC.
The company received the approval at a Tuesday, June 18 hearing. During the event, the development Director at Summix, Stuart Black, said the company is well-prepared to assist in establishing more accommodation for students in the city.
Summix had previously planned to provide a hotel on the site, but due to a lack of demand for hotel rooms and offices, the focus passed on student housing.
The 934-bed student accommodation will now be built across the city center, bounded by Anderston Quay, Warroch Street, Whitehall Street, and Hydepark Street, media reports say.
According to data obtained by the Scottish Green Party and reported by Glasgow Guardian, the cost of student accommodation in the city has been increasing significantly.
These data, obtained through a Freedom of Information request (FoI), also showed that the average cost of university accommodation has risen by 90 percent since 2012. Back then, the fee that had to be paid per room during a week stood at £104.11. The cost increased to £198.47 during the 2023/24 academic year.
“These above inflation increases to student accommodation are really concerning. Higher education should be accessible to everyone, without anyone having to work long hours while studying, or having to get into debt,” Scottish Green Party candidate in the Hillhead by-election Seonad Hoy told the newspaper.
Earlier this year, Danehurst Developments Ltd also submitted plans to the city’s council for purpose-built student accommodation at 63-77 Otago Street. However, no additional details were disclosed regarding this matter.
Last year, a proposal was made for a 34-floor building to accommodate students. According to proposals, this building was planned to be built on the site of a former tax office in Glasgow.
Glasgow is one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom and home to more than 185,000 students from 140 countries.
