These Are the Programs That Int’l Students in Australia Should Study to Be Eligible for Extended Post-Study Work Rights

The Australian government has announced it will allow international students who complete degrees in areas that address skill shortages to remain and work in Australia for an extra two years.

Beginning in July 2023, the government will be extending the Temporary Graduate Work Visa (subclass 485) for international students pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in disciplines that range from medicine to agriculture. Differently, PhD candidates are all eligible for the extension despite their field of study.

Additionally, working hours that international students are allowed to work in Australia will increase from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight, Erudera.com reports.

The Chief Executive of Universities Australia, the peak body for higher education in Australia, Catriona Jackson, said that the country needs more skilled people who could help ease the pressure amid the current skills crisis.

“Making it easier for more of the talented international graduates our universities educate to use their Australian education in Australia’s cities and regions makes complete sense. Hundreds of thousands of international students come to our world-class universities each year, yet very few remain here – just 16 per cent. We are worse off for that, economically and socially,” she said.

Post-study work rights for chosen degrees will change as follows:

  • From two years to four years extension for select Bachelor degrees.
  • From three years to five years for select Master's degrees.
  • From four years to six years for doctoral students.

The extension of working rights will apply to students graduating in certain fields, including medicine, pharmacy, psychology, engineering, technology, and education. After a mapping process, Jobs and Skills Australia and the Department of Education have compiled the following list of professions and qualifications eligible for post-study work rights extension:
