5 French Higher Education Institutions Rank in Top 200 in World University Rankings 2021

Five French higher education institutions have been listed in the top 200, and forty others in the list of the top 1000 best universities in the world, ranked by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 (THE).
The five French education institutions which have been ranked in the top 200 are as follows:
- Paris Sciences et Lettres University has been ranked 46th
- Sorbonne University has been ranked 87th
- École Polytechnique has been ranked 93rd
- Paris University has been ranked 136th
- Paris-Saclay University has been ranked 178th
Four of the abovementioned universities are institutions that emerge from the recent grouping of higher education institutions in France. The grouping strategy has been applauded by the French Minister for Higher Education Frédérique Vidal, who said that“new models of universities which are proving their relevance and are now recognised abroad, testifying to the quality of our teaching and research at the international level.”
Whereas, the 17 education institutes ranked in the top 500 are:
- Ecole Télécom Paris
- Ecole des Ponts – ParisTech
- The Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon
- The University of Montpellier
- Aix-Marseille University
- The University of Grenoble – Alps
- IMT Atlantique
- The University of Versailles – Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines
- The University of Bordeaux
- The Ecole Centrale of Nantes
- The Federal University of Toulouse
- The Agro Institute
Data released from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 shows that eight education institutions from the US as well as two from the United Kingdom have ranked in the top 10. In addition to the US and UK, Chinese universities for the first time have ranked higher in university world rankings.
According to the annual study titled “Study plan and success of foreign students in international mobility” published recently by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, 13 per cent of all students or 358,000 students in total were registered in French higher education institutions during the period of 2018-19.
Included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 are 1,500 universities in total from 93 countries and regions. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings role is to conduct the assessment of the world’s universities by including research, teaching, knowledge transfer as well as international outlook.
